The Formative Years

I’ve spent a good portion of my formative years dog-trotting (pardon the pun) around Central Oregon.  I’ve wasted way too much time listening to my loquacious master talk about homes in Bend and real estate in Central Oregon.  It hasn’t been all bad though; because I’ve been able to hang at some of the nicest golf course communities in Bend–Tetherow, Broken Top, and Pronghorn.

My favorite, though, is Brasada Ranch (Search for homes at Brasada Ranch) in Powell Butte Oregon.  I love it . . . it’s like a giant doggie wonderland; great smells, diversified terrain, and lots of bunnies and deer to chase.  I even like the homes at Brasada Ranch.  The ranch cabins are cool, and I simply adore the barnwood sided custom homes.  I’d love to live at Brasada Ranch!

I have to admit, there is one thing that saddens me–my favorite area of Brasada Ranch, Shumway Lake, has  disappeared; it just isn’t there any more.  It’s dried up.  As a pup, I can remember heading over to the quiet westside of Alfalfa Road (the side that only the bass fishermen and the teenagers know), tripping alongside the irrigation canal,

down the aptly named Lago Vista Drive to the lake itself.  It was a veritable oasis at Brasada Ranch.  There was lots of wildlife (I used to try to sneak up on the mallards with their shiny emerald helmets).  And there was even a stretch of time one spring where there were scores  of yellow-headed blackbirds (they looked as if somebody had simply dunked their heads into some bright yellow paint; so vivid as to appear fake!) nesting in the tules that lined the lake at Brasada Ranch.

I loved hanging at the Lake (named after the original owners of the ranch), looking east toward some of the houses at Brasada Ranch, and at Battle Butte and Hat Rock.

Fly Fishing Near Brasada Ranch?

brasada-june-2006-024

It was a great spot for fly fishing near Brasada Ranch. Once, I even remember my master paddling his kayak out to the middle of the lake and drinking a cold, cheap beer.  I barked at him.  I miss those times.
