Musings of a mutt . . . Mt. Bachelor Kennel Club dog show

by Rocco (posthumously) on July 2, 2009

“You ain’t nothin’ but a hound dog . . . cryin’ all the time”

The day started about like most others . . . I crawled casually out of my kennel, stretched languorously, gave a healthy shake, then padded over to the door.  I scratched it ever so politely; a subtle sign that I wanted in.  I then ambled outside into the cool Bend Oregon air.  It was going to be another one of those 300 days of sunshine we get here in Central Oregon. I marveled briefly at the salubrious nature of the high desert climate.  But, I didn’t dwell on it . . . instead, I went through my ritual ablutions then woofed a quick breakfast.

Today, we had big plans . . . my master and I were headed to the Mt. Bachelor Kennel Club All Breed Dog Show in Redmond Oregon.  I’d been there  many times to check on real estate in Central Oregon and homes in Redmond.  I clamored into the shiny black Audi TT (a chick magnet if ever there were one), the soft leather bucket seat fitting me like a tight glove.

We headed up Hwy 97 towards the Deschutes County Fairgrounds, my cropped ears blowing in the breeze, my large black wet nose alert to every new aroma.  It was a great morning to be a dog.  I marveled again at the jagged snow-capped peaks in the distance to the left.

I was shocked at the number of cars already in the lot.  We found a parking place. I sensed a pang of remorse from my normally stoic master . . . I could tell that he coveted the car next to ours.

an earlier era?

I think it maybe reminded him of an earlier, more carefree time.

“They said you was high classed . . . but that was just a lie”

I’ve been in some pretty nice homes in Bend Oregon, but I have to say, that as we walked around I was struck by the fancy digs some of the canines  had.

I also have a pretty good image of myself (my master is always telling me that “there is nothing so manly as self-deprecation”) . . . I’m a good-looking beast.  But as we continued to meander, I began to feel just a bit insecure.  There were some pretty far out specimens.  Some had no hair; I worried that they’d get sunburned.

Some you couldn’t tell whether they were coming or going:

Some were pretty

They made me feel like an unrefined brute.  But others made me very happy to be who I am:

We continued to stroll; the day became hot.  I wanted to go home.  We watched a couple of competitions. These dogs were pretty smart (but if they were really smart, why were they running through funny obstacles on a hot summer day?)

Finally, we’d seen enough of the Mt. Bachelor Kennel Club dog show.  Even my master didn’t want  to check out more real estate in Central Oregon; he just wanted to get back to our Bend house.  For me, it was a great show; nice to see how the other half lives.  I left feel ing pretty good about myself . . . I’m happy chasing the deer and the bunnies, (maybe someday I’ll even catch one) scaring the joggers, and protecting my house.

The sky was turning pink as we headed for home; the mountains still looked big.
